Most homeowners spend weeks selecting the perfect tiles, only to give grout a single afternoon's thought. Yet the grout you choose determines how your tiles look after 5 years, not just 5 days. In Rajasthan's challenging climate, this choice is especially consequential.
What is Cement Grout?
Traditional cement-based grout has been used for decades. It's mixed on-site, applied between tiles, and hardens through a chemical reaction with water. Available as sanded (for wider joints) and unsanded (for narrow joints) varieties.
Advantages of Cement Grout
- Lower upfront cost
- Widely available at all hardware stores
- Easy to apply — suitable for DIY installation
- Available in many colours
Disadvantages of Cement Grout
- Porous — absorbs stains, oils, and bacteria
- Cracks with building movement or temperature changes
- Requires sealing every 1–2 years
- Discolours over time, especially in wet areas
What is Epoxy Grout?
Epoxy grout is a two-component system: an epoxy resin and a hardener. When mixed, they create a rigid, non-porous material far superior to cement in most measurable ways.
Advantages of Epoxy Grout
- Zero porosity — completely stain and waterproof
- Chemical resistant — doesn't react to cleaning agents
- No cracking — highly flexible compared to cement
- Long lifespan — can last the lifetime of the tile installation
- Doesn't need sealing — ever
Disadvantages of Epoxy Grout
- Higher cost (3–5x cement grout)
- More challenging to apply — shorter working time
- Harder to correct mistakes during installation
Rajasthan-Specific Recommendation
Given Jodhpur's extreme temperature swings, dust, and the occasional heavy monsoon, we strongly recommend epoxy grout for all wet areas (bathrooms, kitchens) and for outdoor tile installations. The additional upfront cost is recovered within 2–3 years through eliminated resealing costs and avoided stain damage.
Colour Matching Tips
Both grout types are available in standard colours. As a general rule: choose a grout colour that either closely matches your tile colour (for a seamless look) or creates deliberate contrast (for a graphic, defined look). Avoid medium tones that neither blend nor contrast — they tend to look dirty quickly.
